• Buddy Poppies:

Our Post distributes “Buddy Poppy’s” and seeks donations throughout May and on significant holiday weekends:

Among all the flowers that evoke the memories and emotions of those lost in defense of our country is the red poppy first associated with the losses of war after the publication of the poem, “In Flanders’s Field”, by Col. John McCrae of the Canadian army. The poem describes the blowing red fields of poppies planted among the battlegrounds of the fallen in WWI. First distributed by the VFW in 1929, Buddy Poppy’s became a symbol of our remembrance of the sacrifices of those who served and died in the defense of our way of life. For more than 92 years, the VFW’s Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans’ welfare and the wellbeing of their dependents and our communities.

Please look for our volunteers outside Fred Meyer’s, Bi-Mart and Safeway during May, and Memorial Day, July 4th, and Veterans Day weekends. Buddy Poppy’s are never sold. They are a rememberance of those fallen in the service of our country. Stop by our volunteer tables and donate to help veterans in our area. All proceeds go to the support of our local veterans, their families, and the community. New flag poles at the Pacific Sunrise Cemetery and Siuslaw Elementary School, new classroom flags for the Mapleton Schools, support of Backpacks for Kids, six $1000 scholarships for Siuslaw seniors, recognition of School District Teachers of the Year, EMT / Firefighters, and State Police of the Year, Florence Festival of Tree, Siuslaw Emergency Readiness Project as well as numerous individual donation to those in need are just some of the efforts we have undertaken this year.
